KC:  How about those Carolina Hurricanes?!

MB:  Growing up in Raleigh I was a Hurricanes fan for as long as I can remember. It’s been a rough stretch the last few years being a Hurricanes fan, but seeing them have such success this season is awesome, and it’s a great look for hockey in North Carolina, a non traditional hockey market.

KC:  How long have you been playing hockey?

MB:  I’ve been playing hockey since I was 5, I’m 24 years old now. I grew up in Raleigh playing street hockey in my backyard. I played house league until I was 8 years old, then played travel hockey. I went to Culver Military Academy, a boarding school in Indiana with a great hockey program, when I was 14 for high school. After 2 years there I was drafted to the USHL, I did my last year of high school in Nebraska playing Tier 1 junior hockey for the Lincoln Stars. After a severe knee injury I went back home to play Tier 3 junior for the East Coast Eagles. At the age of 22 after taking 2 years off, I decided to tryout for the new pro team, at the time, coming to Winston Salem, the Carolina Thunderbirds. I just finished my 2nd year with that team.

“ . . . It was an unbelievable, surreal feeling. A lot of guys on the team including myself have never won a championship. It was so great to win, and celebrate with my team and the city of Winston-Salem.”

KC:  How did it feel to win the Championship this year?

MB:  This is the 2nd year of the team in Winston Salem, last year we made the playoffs but were knocked out in the first round. So this year our coach, Andre Niec, and the returning players really wanted to have a better ending to the season. Our coach put together an awesome team, built up of guys from many different countries, and we dominated. We lost only 6 games in regulation during the regular season, and swept the Port Huron Prowlers in the first round of playoffs, and beat The Elmira Enforcers 3 games to 1 in a best of 5 championship round to win the Commissioners Cup. It was an unbelievable, surreal feeling. A lot of guys on the team including myself have never won a championship. It was so great to win, and celebrate with my team and the city of Winston-Salem.

KC:  Describe your favorite memory of a moment in the sport of hockey?

MB:  My favorite hockey moment I can remember was definitely the Hurricanes winning the Stanley Cup in 2006. My dad took me out of summer camp that day to take me to the game. I was 11 years old. Being there to see Rod lift the cup, and seeing strangers hugging and crying with each other, it was beautiful. And solidified that playing hockey as a job was what I wanted to do one day.

KC:  In closing, how did it feel to see the Charlotte Checkers win their first AHL Calder Cup last night?

MB:  It’s awesome to see the Checkers win the Calder cup, I got to know a few of the guys on that team last summer, and I’m super happy for them. With us winning the championship in the same year, it’s a great look for pro hockey in an unusual market.
