If you skim through the Business of Fashion’s annual report you can’t help but notice sustainability as THE core principle of the year. You can see this growing philosophy of Design emerging everywhere around you if you give yourself the time to stop, observe and listen. The British Fashion Council continues to boost its Positive Fashion initiative, self-proclaimed as: “a platform designed to celebrate industry best practice and encourage future business decisions to create positive change.”

As London continues to expand its global fashion presence with World class brands, it was exciting news to hear that the Vogue Designer Fashion Fund has renewed its partnership with JD.com, China’s largest retailer.

Fashion Collaboration at its very best!

London isn’t the only City that agrees with the social responsibility of fashion’s agenda, although some industry insiders will claim that out of the Big Four, London remains elevated when considering global fashion meccas.

According to the BBC, “Not only is London the greatest, most dynamic city in the world, it’s never been better than it is now. Move over, New York.” (disclaimer: not my words! #iheartNY)

But who knows what the Future of Fashion holds. The BoF eloquently states, “The fashion industry is going through a seismic shift.”  Enough said. I like to think of Fashion as the highest modern Art form. An experimental platform for gallant paragons to develop and share their most revolutionary ideas until those ideas take shape and trickle down into the common sphere of what is trending. And then people can buy those ideas. And look svelte wearing them!

You can do a simple search on Google and see that there is no shortage of comparisons over which city is the winner of the fashion capital of the 21st century. However, perhaps what we should be focusing on is the omnichannel as an entire industry shifts to provide a premium shopping experience for its upwardly mobile customers.

That being said, let us move on to the more important details of the Big Four Fashion Weeks. The FASHION...

Here are my 5 favorite upcoming trends shown at the Fashion Weeks this past month. Be on the lookout for them in 2019!

  1. Colour Harmonies and the coin pendant necklace (see image).
  2. A return to sensuality and sophistication.  Mother of Pearl’s well-executed Collection was drawn upon references from her childhood in the North of England and was inspired by the strength and femininity of the women who surrounded her. How perfectly au courant.

3.  The sustainability initiative. This year marked the introduction of digital passes at London Fashion Week, reducing paper and plastic waste from all future events. As an environmental advocate myself, I began the first paper recycling program at my High School which is still in place to this day. So needless to say, this “trend” is definitely a step in the right direction for everything and everyone.

4.  Embracing change in digital fashion.  From what I have seen, it seems to be Germany who has a single-pointed focus on the application of digital technology in its many forms for the production and consumption of fashion apparel and services. Is it tech? Is it fashion? Time will tell.

5.  Fringe and nothing but (ethical) furry bags and shoes. Need I say more?

I will finish this article with two quotes meant to uplift and inspire, which is what fashion does in my life every single day.

“And in time of politic division, when border seem to be closing, it is important that we celebrate what can unite."
~ The British Fashion Council, 2018

“Come together right now,
Over me”
~ The Beatles, 1969

Let’s make 2019 one for the books!

XOXO,
Kelly
